Five minutes.

The whimpering first, the low choking sobs. Kane saw the shape of the corner of the house change, as if a growth had settled upon it. The growth pulled away. It was a large shadow that pressed a thin shape to it. It limped and plodded in a straight line toward the Fairlane.

Kane put the shotgun on the ground. Not much chance he could use that. Not with Karen there. It would be the Sport. Still, to be sure, he closed his eyes and felt for the shotgun. He would have to know where it was if he needed it.

Twenty feet from the car. He could see where the huge shape of Franco ended and the smaller shape of Karen began. He could see that the limping movement he’d noticed was the result of the slackness of Karen, that Franco was all but carrying her.

The front door opened and Hardy Winston stood there, the Winchester at his hip, back-lighted, the ribbon of light cutting down the driveway toward the Fairlane.

Franco whirled into the light and fired twice. The .38 in his big hand seemed like a child’s toy. Both shots missed Winston. Wood splintered from the doorway beside him and Winston fell away.

Franco said. “We get to the car, I’ll open the door. Stay in front of me until I tell you to move. When I tell you, slide past the wheel but you keep your head up. And don’t touch the other door. That makes me dead. Before that happens you’re dead too. You hear me?”

Karen didn’t answer.

They reached the side of the car. Franco shifted the arm that supported her. Now the arm that held the gun was around her neck. He turned and grabbed the car door and swung it open. The light flared out at them. Franco pushed her forward until she was behind the door but still between him and the lighted doorway.

“Now,” Franco said. He gave Karen a shove.

Kane straightened up. Before Franco could turn and follow Karen, Kane shot him in the back three times. The force of the slugs threw him against the car door.

Inside the car, Karen screamed until she ran out of breath.
